Default Suppressed 50 anyone?

We went to Dead Zero Shooting Park last weekend and brought out the 50... It was a great day and everyone had a great time. IF you have not shot a 50 suppressed, you are missing out. Matt from Dead Zero commented on the bullet trace as "watching river barges fly downrange" when he was spotting them at 1000... Just wanted to share a picture with you guys for something to look at on Monday to brighten your spirits.

Judging by the size of the action, i'd say it's just a big dumb weight.

I think he said it was a big weight to reduce recoil. I find it interesting that suppressors reduce recoil but seem to increase recoil on these larger caliber rifles. Are the breaks on these big boys just that much more effective compared to a suppressor when it comes to recoil control.

The suppressor slows down the gasses escaping but doesn't redirect them. The brake will counteract the recoil by reflecting the gasses backwards, pulling the rifle forwards. The suppressor will just stretch out the recoil impulse.

The Barrett 50 cal suppressor has a 2 chamber brake built into the front but I don't know how effective it is.

It depends a lot on the suppressor. Some suppressors trap more gas and anytime you slow the gas down you recover some of the energy which reduces the recoil. With some suppressors though the surface area is too small to do much in that respect. My 50 cal can is 2.75"diameter and it reduces the recoil quite a lot just like the suppressors on smaller rifles do. On the other hand we shot a Elite Iron can on the same rifle and the damn thing ringed my eyebrow with the scope. I've never had that happen with any rifle before so I was really suprised. The EI can was a 1.75"diameter and a little shorter so less area means less energy extraction. It wasn't as quiet either.

Some brakes work by redirecting the gas to create forward thrust. Some of them just redirect the gas to the sides which doesn't do much other than change its direction. The recoil reduction from that type brake is no better than the suppressors and in many cases not at good because they don't have the area to recover the energy that a can does. So a really good brake can reduce recoil by a bit more than a bad brake. A good suppressor can too.....

And finally its not the caliber that makes the difference. Its the ratio of the size and diameter of the suppressor to the gas volume and pressure. Most of the cans you see on 50 cal rifles are too small.

I can answer two things here really...

The first is the counter weight to counteract recoil. it is a 46 pound weight to absorb recoil, the gun it shootable without it, but without proper technique it would be easy to get your eyebrow opened up for internal inspection. Since we knew that some of the people that would want to shoot it were completely new to this type of firearm, we wanted to do something to make the gun "safer" and therefore leaving the shooter with memories of a great day at the range instead of us having to pay for the sutures at the ER... This gun is really light for a caliber this heavy and our brake works well in atmosphere, but not so good once placed inside the silencer. Yes, it is a TOMB mount design, but since the gas can't exhaust from the brake , we lose some of the performance that the brake would have, the "big dumb weight" solves this by absorbing this energy and making the gun recoil like a 308... Maybe just a little more, but since there is so much mass, it is more of a push and the sharp impulse is completely gone. We had literally 100 pound women shooting it like nothing.

As for the silencer, we opted for a can that was more quiet than anything as it was the point of this project to get a 50 to hearing safe and this silencer does that...with only 39 ounces of titanium to boot. That was another goal, to keep the weight under 4 pounds and this one comes in at 2 1/2.

But the main reason for the weight it to protect the shooters that we knew had no idea what they were getting into when they sat down behind it...

Waitaminit, is this the place in Spencer TN? I live like 45 min away, I keep hearing about what great facilities they have. Was actually about to sign up for their 3-gun matches when the Covid came down on us.

Pretty nice rifle, the weight is a nice solution for newbie shooters. Hearing safe with regular supersonic ammo? Impressive.

So Dave, did you guys build up this rifle custom? Or just set it up for suppression?

Yep, the one and the same. IT is really nice for rifles and pistols, they have some stuff for shotguns, but some of the shotgun stuff isn't finished yet, you can do the one where you shoot at these stations on a sort of shotgun golf course, but the one where you stand on the concrete slab and shoot at targets in an arc isn't ready yet.

The rifle is just a SHTF50 upper from Safety Harbor Firearms on one of our older lowers and we put one of our 50 cans on it, because who doesnt want to shoot a suppressed 50?
