Every deer I've ever killed has been with a Savage rifle in .308. I'm looking forward to getting the barrel chopped on my Scout and threading it. Harvester is in ATF jail right now; I've got quite a while to figure out what barrel length it will be.

I'm out west so its more open. I use 308 for elk and I have dropped them over 500+ yards no problem with the 308. (175 grain Sierras)
for varmints 22-250 and 223

I've seen ground squirrels and prairie dogs explode like that, but never elk. That's some big bore varmint hunting!

In the 300BLK Leo, 125 SST over 18.8 H110 (or Win 296) at 2.100" out of 8" barrel runs 2035 FPS, zeroed at 100 Yards- at 100 yards, 897 ft/lbs and at 200, it drops 8.2" and delivers 694 ft/lbs.

At 100 yards, the 6.8 delivers 45% more energy. At 200, 56% more.
I'd be curious to see what those same 300 rounds would do out of a 12" or 16" barrel. It is a short barrel round, but with an 8" barrel you are lucky to get 1000 fpe at the muzzle.

In colorado the rifle can't be an SBR anyway if you want to take deer with it(you CAN use an AR pistol for "handgun hunting"), but it has to make 1000 fpe at 100yds.

So for deer, in colorado, out of a rifle, supersonic 300 is somewhere between kosher and barely legal depending on your ammo choice.

Same 18.8 grains of W296 out of my 16" CMMG 300BLK with 125 grain SSTs clocked at 2265 FPS. So, 1115 FPE and 2005 FPS at 100 yards.

Ran across something interesting from a book entitled "Shooting Incident Reconstruction" and from a post by Phil Dater, both regarding supersonic crack and caliber.

The only factor that affects how loud the supersonic crack is, is the diameter of the bullet.

Dater set up a meter 50 m down range and fired supersonic 7.62 and 5.56 along a path 1 m to the side of the sound meter. The supersonic crack measured 152 dB for 7.62 and 147 dB for 5.56. He also measured 22 LR at 142, but the brand he used was transsonic at that distance, which i don't think he realized.

In the book they got 147 db for .224 and 151 Db for 30 caliber at 100 yards down range and 5 ft from the flight path. They also tested 22-250 and 45 cal at 10 ft from the flight path using a variety of bullet weights, shapes, and velocities with values of 141 dB and 147 dB respectively. The diameter was the only relevant factor.

The shock wave propagates in the direction of and outward from the bullet flight path, and given the distance of the end of a firearm from the shooter, will have a measured effect at the ear which is lower in magnitude than what was found in the above observations. However, assuming that the sonic crack contributes in some way to the loudness of a suppressed firearm to the shooter, the diameter of the projectile may be an important factor in choosing the best supersonic platform for you. I estimate a 3 dB difference between a 7.62 and 6mm projectile, and 4 dB for 223. In our database, the quietest AT Ear numbers for bolt action 16" 223 and 18" 7.62 is 126 dB and 129 dB respectively. A .243 bolt action rifle with an integral or with a kick ass can would have a lot of potential.

SO WOULD A 6.8 LEONIDAS, help me out here man........

Nice quote. A bit off topic, but speaking of Dater, he is giving a Silencer Principles Class at Long Mountain Outfitters later this month and again in September. Details at:http://longmountain.com/training/index.cfm?id=1

I'll be using a 25-45 this year for deer because it works in the environment I hunt in.

I tried to buy the DVD that they give out at the class but they don't sell it separately. I'd love to go.

On a side note, I remember someone saying that they were interested in a Leo. There's one for sale at the big forum for $1,250, unfired, on a F4 in MT.

If they haven't been approved yet, can it still be transferred out of state without having to do 2 tax stamps?
